In 1969, the manager of the newly formed Holden Dealer Team, Harry Firth, gave Peter Brock his break with an offer to drive at Bathurst, Australia’s most prestigious endurance road race, in a Holden HT Monaro GTS 350.
Brock and co-driver Des West, began the race weekend in 10th position on the starting grid with a qualifying lap time of 2:55.4
After 130 laps the race was won by the newly formed Holden Dealer Team with Colin Bond and Tony Roberts. Team mates Peter Brock and Des West finished third in their Holden HT Monaro GTS350s. In between them in second position was defending race winners Bruce McPhee and his single-lap co-driver Barry Mulholland driving a Phase 1 Ford Falcon GTHO.
The term “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” was so true to vehicles of this era as the race teams were only allowed to make minor modifications to the vehicle due to racing regulations at the time, this meant they had to be registered for road use and have full road car trim.
After the 1969 Bathurst race Brock’s car was on-sold by Harry Firth to the Morris Family who continued to race it. Behind the wheel was Bob Morris who stated “it was a very competitive car, it even held quite a few records at the time”.
